Sam Massell to give annual ‘State of Buckhead’ address at Buckhead Business breakfast Feb. 21

Sam Massell, former Atlanta mayor and 25-year president of the BuckheadCoalition, will give his annual State of Buckhead address at the BuckheadBusiness Association Weekly Breakfast meeting on Thursday, Feb. 21, at the CityClub of Buckhead.

The Buckhead BusinessAssociation Breakfast Series takes place Thursday mornings from 7:30-9:00 a.m.at the City Club of Buckhead, located on the 18th floor of theAtlanta Financial Center, 3343 Peachtree Road. Tickets are $10 for BBA membersand $20 for visitors and guests.  Validated self-parking is available forall attendees.
Massell is thefounding president of the Buckhead Coalition, a nonprofit civic organizationcomprised of chief executive officers in the Buckhead area who are dedicated toensuring sustainable growth and a high quality of life throughout the Buckheadarea. 
A life-long residentof Atlanta, Massell has had successful careers in real estate brokerage,elected office, the field of tourism, and association management. Massell spent20 years as a realtor, rising to vice president of Allan-Grayson RealtyCompany, then one of the city’s largest commercial brokerage firms.
During that time, hewas elected a charter member of the Atlanta Real Estate Board Million DollarClub and honored three times by the Georgia Association of Real Estate Boardsfor the “Outstanding Transaction of the Year.”
While in real estate,Massell became active in a range of civic work, which kick-started his careeras an elected official. He served 22 years in elected office, including eightyears as president of Atlanta’s Board of Aldermen (now City Council) and fouryears as mayor of Atlanta.While Massell wasmayor, he was named president of the 15,000 member National League of Cities.
He served a four-yearterm on the board of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA)and was a member of the board of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games.
Among otherachievements, Massell’s administration is credited with establishing MARTA,developing the city’s first enclosed arena (the Omni Coliseum), and providingthe Central City Woodruff Park at Five Points—all accomplished without callingon ad valorem taxes. He pioneered minority opportunities in Atlanta citygovernment as the first mayor to appoint a female to City Council and toappoint African Americans to lead city departments.
Massell serves onnumerous boards, including the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau,Atlanta Historical Society, and Atlanta Speech School. He is in the AtlantaConvention and Visitors Bureau “Hospitality Hall of Fame”; Georgia Trend magazine’s “MostInfluential Georgian’s Hall of Fame”; International Civil Rights “Walk of Fame”and Georgia State University Robinson College “Business Hall of Fame”.
Non-BBA members of thepublic are encouraged to attend the meeting to hear Massell.
There will be no BBA Weekly Breakfast on Feb. 28. Instead, the BBA willhold its Monthly Social from 5-7 p.m. at The Capital Grille inBuckhead,  255 E. Paces Ferry Road.
On March 7, the BBAWeekly Breakfast speaker will be David Jernigan, executive director of KIPPMetro Atlanta. Then on March 14, the BBA Monthly Social will be held from 5-7p.m. at Del Frisco’s Grille in Buckhead,   3376 Peachtree Rd NE (adjacentto the Mandarin Oriental hotel).
