“Not only will everyschool and public building in the city now be outfitted with the necessarycarbon monoxide detectors, but we have now developed consistent proceduresacross the city for regularly inspecting this equipment,” Bond added.
Under the newlegislation, every public building under the jurisdiction of the City ofAtlanta must be equipped with carbon monoxide detectors and warning equipmenteffective July 1. This equipment will be monitored and inspectedregularly to ensure proper maintenance in accordance with regulationsestablished by Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.
Exposure to carbonmonoxide, which is colorless and odorless, can cause serious harm includingheadache, dizziness, nausea, chest pain, confusion, and at high levels, loss ofconsciousness and death. According to the Centers for DiseaseControl, every year more than 400 Americans die from unintentional carbonmonoxide poisoning, with more than 20,000 requiring a trip to the emergencyroom.
