Blogger of the Week: Molly MednikowEditor Carol BryantWednesday, Oct 3, 2012 12:22 pmBlogger of the Week: Molly MednikowMolly Mednikow is the Founder and Executive Director of Amazon CARES.  She grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and now divides her time between Atlanta, Georgia and Iquitos, Peru. She writes for the Amazon Cares blog.
Amazon CARES stands for Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety.  They are the only animal welfare organization for domestic animals in the Amazon region. They began in 2004.

“Family tradition dictated that I become a jeweler, so I got an MBA and opened a high end jewelry store in Atlanta.  The business was successful, thank goodness, as selling it enabled me to start Amazon CARES charity,” Mednikow says.  I thought I’d be in jewelry my entire life, but after participating in volunteer vacations to the Peruvian Amazon, I developed a love for the natural surroundings and the calmer, community based way of life.  It is such a cliché but I truly “found myself” there, which is something nobody ever would have expected.”

Amazon Cares and the Bar Association recently joined forces with the Bar Association of Loreto recently, now under the leadership of Dr. Walter Alva Cambero.  This alliance is for the sole purpose of defending and protecting animal rights.  Animal abuse includes a range of behaviors in people who intentionally cause unnecessary pain, suffering or distress to animals, including the murder of animals.

In a precedent setting case, Amazon Cares brought their first animal abuse case to trial. Recently, the judge handed down a harsh sentence in the case, a true victory for Amazon CARES and the pro-bono attorneys of the Bar Association.

Sandra Milagros Padilla Alvis, never imagined that an attempt on the life of Arthas, a puppy of 5 months, owned by Alfredo Martín Díaz García, would result in being charged for a crime.  In the 3rd Counsel Magistrates Court she was sentenced for offenses against morality under an Animal Abuse and Cruelty Code.
