Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis received aletter Monday (Nov. 5) from the Georgia AdvancED Council confirming thatAtlanta’s school system is being moved to full accreditation.

AdvancED, the nonprofit schoolaccreditation firm based in Alpharetta, had put APS high schools on probationin January 2011 of last year, citing a “dysfunctional” school board. The agencythen changed the status last November to “accredited in advisement,” a stepshort of full accreditation.
This week’s action restores fullaccreditation to all of the district’s high schools.
“The board should be commended for the workthat it did to achieve this status,” Davis said in a prepared statement. “Weare all pleased that this is behind us.”
The initial decision to put APS onprobation was not related to the high schools’ academic performance, but itcreated obstacles for students trying to earn college scholarships.
Full accreditation will “make sure that ourstudents have the best opportunity possible to pursue their college and careerdreams,” Atlanta Board of Education Chairman Reuben McDaniel said. “We should celebrate thismilestone.”
