Former Piedmont Hospital CEO, Hulett Sumlin, dies

Hulett Dodge Sumlin,who for 35 years escorted Piedmont Hospital through changing times, died suddenlylast Sunday at age 82.

Sumlin, who lived atLenbrook retirement community in Buckhead,  started in 1956 as the hospital’s administrativeassistant and, when he retired in 1991, he was its president and chiefexecutive. He oversaw the hospital’s move fromdowntown Atlanta to its current location on Peachtree Road in Buckhead.
An Atlanta native,Sumlin attended Boys High before going to Episcopal High School in Alexandria,Va., for his senior year. In 1953, he went on to the University of Georgia,where he earned a bachelor’s of science in pharmacy.
Sumlin’s careeraccomplishments included expanding Piedmont Hospital  and its medical staffs, doubling the number ofbeds and helping to establish the Piedmont Hospital Foundation.
In a 1991 AtlantaJournal-Constitution article that announced Sumlin’s retirement, he wascredited with presiding “over a long period of unprecedented growth atPiedmont.”
Heis survived by his wife of 51 years, Linda Lou; his sons and their wives, Andyand Kim, John and Laura, Dodge and Lynn; and six grandchildren.
