City Council approves $7.5 million in water bill refunds, $2.4 million to Buckhead water/sewer customers

The Atlanta City Council Monday unanimously approved a resolution byBuckhead Council Members Yolanda Adrean and Howard Shook to give 3,490 city watercustomers refunds reaching a total of $7.5 million, including $2.4 million to 1,401Buckhead customers.

Although the billing error affected only 2 percent of all Atlantawater/sewer customers, data shows that slightly more than two-thirds of theAtlanta customers (1,401), who were affected, live in Buckhead councilDistricts 7 and 8, which are represented by Shook and Adrean.

The total amount of District 7 and 8 refundswill be nearly $2.4 million with the remaining amount being refunded to otherimpacted city water customers. The refunds will include 7 percent interest aswell as penalties and late fees.

The Department of Watershed Management plans to mail the refund checksno later than Nov. 26 to those customers who used irrigation meters to limittheir sewage bills and were erroneously overbilled between July 1, 2008 andSept. 30, 2010.

The billing errors were revealed by Watershed Management officials who saidstricter controls have been implemented to prevent such billing errors in thefuture.

“Returning these funds to the public isfantastic,” Shook said. “This council will watch for confirmation that the newcontrols prevent future billing errors.”

“It is regrettable that this error in billingoccurred,” Adrean said. “I am grateful that the city’s water customers willsoon receive a corrective refund plus interest from Watershed.”
