Happy Mother's Day!  Whether you have children or are a pet-parent, today is a day to celebrate your hard work!

Today I am sharing some humane educational materials (translated from Spanish) that we use in Peru regarding myths surrounding cat ownership and pregnancy.

Many members of all the medical community, including gynecologists continue to spread false information about cats and pregnancy.  Having a healthy cat should not present a risk to your health and/or your baby. On the contrary, their presence prevents the proliferation of rodents, which are highly dangerous and carry contagious infections.   Continue reading below....

TOXOPLASMOSIS:  The Truth Behind the Myth
If you are pregnant, do not think that you must abandon your cat or that your baby is in mortal danger.  Simply take precautions to avoid contracting parasites.  Do not believe the myths.
  • Take care of your pet. Provide clean water and healthy food.  Do not let your pet eat raw or unclean food.
  • Take your pet to the vet regularly for anti-parasitical medications.
  • If you prefer, ask a family member to clean your cat's litter box while you are pregnant.
  • If you clean the litter box, take precautions and wear gloves to avoid contact with fecal matter.  Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before eating and after you come into contact with raw meat, dirt or sand on your cat.
  • Rather than getting rid of your cat, avoid eating raw or undercooked meat, unwashed fruits or vegetables, raw eggs and unpasteurized milk.
