City Council votes to raise parking violation fines

The Atlanta City Councilapproved  by a vote of 8-4 Monday theadministration’s proposal to raise metered parking violation fines from $25 to$35 in an effort to offset a roughly $4 million budget deficit in the city’scurrent contract with ParkAtlanta.
If aticket is not paid off in 14 days, the fine would become $70. And 45 days aftera ticket is issued, the fine would rise to $95. If an appeal is made, the fineincreases are suspended.


Three of Buckhead's City Council members voted against the increase--Dist. 6 Alex Wan, who now represents part of southeast Buckhead, Dist. 7 Howard Shook and Dist. 9 Felicia Moore--along with Natalyn Archibong, who represents east Atlanta. Buckhead's Dist. 8 Councilwoman Yolanda Adrean voted in favor of the increase in fines. 
The cityof Atlanta entered into a contract in October 2009 with Duncan Solutions forparking management services, including the management and operation of the city’son-street parking program and the enforcement of parking-related regulations onbehalf of the city.
Thecontract commenced in November 2009 and is in effect for a seven-year term. Itincludes provision for maintenance of parking meters and regulatory signage;parking meter collections; on-street parking and right-of-way regulation enforcement;parking citation processing and delinquent collection services; and vehiclebooting and towing services.
Thecity eventually put limits on ParkAtlanta’s enforcement, which resulted in areduction of roughly $4 million from fines.
